English language learning at UDIS

UDIS offers an English medium for communication and we work hard to ensure all learners are able to understand English as this is important for them to access our curriculum. Students learn English, through a multilingual approach which is in line with the IB and our aim to develop internationally minded learners who follow the learner profile.

Benefits for learners at UDIS

Using a multilingual approach, through the use of mother tongues within the classroom, provides these direct benefits to our learners:

Learning takes time

Learning a new language takes time. Up to 2 years for social proficiency and up to 7 years for academic proficiency. So, the key to language learning is what is happening within our classrooms, and the development of student’s academic language, more so than the social language used within the playground.

Our teaching methodology

Our teaching of language is based on best practices for learning language (Cummins, 2007) where our language learning:

  • Scaffolds meaning – teachers use a variety of languages to clarify content through discussions, dictionaries, visual aids and graphic organisers
  • Activates prior knowledge – This helps learners activate, understand and build background knowledge, often through languages like Thai, which can create deeper learning
  • Affirms identity – The identity of our multicultural learners is affirmed by enabling them to showcase their abilities in their home languages and English
  • Extends language – Learners can take control of their use of language and use it to extend their knowledge across different subjects. Reading in a variety of languages is particularly important to this.

No extra fees for English as an Additional Language (EAL)

At UDIS we have never charged extra for EAL students who need the support of our specialist EAL teachers. Where students are recommended to attend extra sessions beyond our regular EAL, we always provide them a choice with how they can meet that need.
