1:1 devices at UDIS

1:1 device programme

UDIS is a 1:1 school which means that learners from Year 3 upwards bring along their own device for use at school.

This could be any device that meets our minimum requirements although we suggest a laptop, of some description, which are more usable than a tablet.

1:1 at UDIS allows our learners access to technology at all stages of their journey and this provides great benefits to the learners at the school. The goal is for students to have access to technology wherever and whenever they need it to enhance their learning.

What is the purpose of the 1:1 programme?

  • We believe that devices are an important tool for our learners which they should have access to throughout the day whenever needed. Learners should not have to wait for a device or go to a computer lab to use technology to help their learning.
  • Devices can help make learning more interactive within the classroom, e.g. electronic voting, use of podcasts, interactive applications online etc.
  • Differentiated instruction is easier and allows teachers to use more software to help our learners learn.
  • Devices can help teach our digital citizenship curriculum and prepare our learners for using devices in the future such as in our middle years programme.
  • Devices provide opportunities for our learners to be more engaged in what they are learning as they can take control of the learning process.

Who needs a device at school?

All learners from Year 3 and upwards are expected to have a device at school which is used to support their learning.

What are the requirements for devices?

The minimum device requirements for the 1:1 programme are:

  • A 10 inch screen or higher for tablets, or at least a 13 inch screen for laptops
    • We strongly recommend laptops as tablets do not often fully meet needs
  • A keyboard (virtual or physical)
  • A legitimate, licensed copy of an operating system (Android, MacOS, iOS or Windows).
  • At least a 2 hour battery life
  • A carrybag, or external case for the device, to enable the device to be safely transported around school

Optional requirements

  • Headphones/ear buds (headphones will be available at school on a shared basis)
  • Thai keyboard for learners wishing to use Thai on their devices (virtual keyboards can easily be installed, overlay stickers are also easy to add)

How is device usage managed at school?

Teachers will organise times across the school day when students will need to use their devices for school work. Students are taught how to use their devices to support their learning. The usage of devices is also governed by our Student Behaviour Policy and our Acceptable Use of Technology Policy to ensure devices are used appropriately.
